House Addition

3 Things to Consider Before Adding On

If your New Jersey home is starting to feel a little cramped, a home addition might be the perfect project for you. Adding another bedroom is the most common choice for home additions, however, homeowners also commonly add other rooms such as dining rooms or other living spaces. If you think adding more square footage might be a good choice for your home, check out these three considerations brought to you by the expert general contractors at Tom Madsen, LLC.

1. Location and Access

Because home additions are not just visible from the inside, the location of your add-on is of the utmost importance. Most home additions are added to the ground floor of the home as second-story additions are typically more expensive and complicated to accomplish. You'll need to, therefore, consider how your new room will flow with your landscaping and the general shape of your house. The goal is for the new room to fit seamlessly, appearing to have been there all along. You'll also need to consider if you want the new addition to have outdoor access. Most bedrooms do not include outside access, but you may want to include beautiful French or sliding doors in your new dining room.

2. View

Next, as you begin to envision your new room, consider where your windows will fit to give you the best access to natural light and beautiful views. If you have a gorgeous landscape, courtyard, or garden outside your new room, take advantage of it by strategically placing windows and doors. On the other hand, if you are building on the side you share with a neighbor, make sure you place windows in locations that will protect both your privacy and theirs.

3. Existing Design

Finally, as we mentioned before, the goal of a home addition is for it to fit seamlessly into your home. As such, you need to make sure the design will flow with the existing design of your home. However, this doesn't mean making the addition match perfectly, as this can be very difficult. Instead, consider introducing new, complementary materials that will make the addition appear organic. To find the right combination, work with an experienced contractor who will be able to visually tie the new addition to the existing structure.
