5 Tips for Improving Energy Efficiency

New Jersey winters are not for the faint of heart. Temperatures easily reach below freezing for months on end. Most people want to crank up the thermostat and stay indoors. 1. Look for drafts.

Windows, doors, exterior walls, and attic doors are often areas that let cold air in and hot air out. Check your home for these drafty areas, and note what the problem is (broken window, faulty door seal, and so on). Once you know what problems exist, you can begin to find solutions.

2. Check your attic insulation.

If it's been a while since you've assessed your attic insulation and ventilation, now might be a good time. Hot air rises and can easily escape through your attic if it's not properly insulated. If you aren't sure what to look for in your attic, contact a home-improvement professional to help you out.

3. Consider window replacement.

Old, wooden windows or damaged windows easily bleed your home's hot air. While you may want to wait until spring or summer, put window replacement on your list of home improvements that will enhance your home's efficiency.

4. Assess your exterior doors.

Any door leading to the outdoors needs to be well-insulated and sealed tight. It's easy for drafts to occur around exterior doors, so check to see whether everything is functioning correctly. 5. Turn down the thermostat.
