Interior Molding and Trim: A Room’s Finishing Touches

If you’d like to improve the look of your home without doing a lot of remodeling work, consider adding interior molding and trim to your rooms. By installing interior molding and trim in your home, you can easily create interesting architectural details and give each room a polished appearance.

You can tackle these interior updates yourself, or you could always hire a home improvement expert to install custom molding and trim for you.

Crown Molding and Baseboard Molding

Two popular applications of molding inside the home are crown molding and baseboard molding.

  • Crown Molding: Crown molding is used on the joint where the ceiling and the wall meet. It draws the eye upward and helps to complete the room.
  • Baseboard Molding: Baseboard molding is installed where the floor and wall meet. Traditionally, it’s been used as a protective kick board.

You’ll find several choices on the market that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Crown molding and baseboard molding can be as simple or elaborate as you wish. Just make sure to keep the style of the molding consistent throughout your entire house.

Wainscoting and Chair Rail

Another way you can accent your home is by adding wainscoting or chair rail to some of your rooms.

  • Wainscoting: Wainscoting is a decorative treatment on the wall where wooden panels are installed from the baseboards up to roughly the bottom third of the wall. Wainscoting can be more expensive, but it creates a beautiful, elegant effect around the room.
  • Chair Rail: Chair rail is a piece of wood molding that is placed horizontally across the wall where the wainscoting stops, at “chair level.” This chair rail protects the wall from damage and finishes the whole look. It can also be installed without the wainscoting for a more affordable, yet still stylish, option.

The simple addition of molding and trim can make a dramatic impact in any boring room. If you’d like to put the finishing touches on your home’s interior, then contact Tom Madsen LLC.
