3 Ways to Increase Curb Appeal

Exterior Home ImprovementDid you recently decide to sell your New Jersey home, and you want it to stand out from the rest? “What is it,” you ask, “that makes buyers want to see one home but not another?” The short answer: curb appeal. Based on the outside of your home, will buyers want to take a look inside? Or will they keep right on driving, afraid of what they might find inside?

Don’t let poor curb appeal hold you back from selling your house. Instead, do something about it. At Tom Madsen LLC, we specialize in exterior home improvement. Here are a few ways we’ve found to enhance the outside of your home to entice potential buyers.

1. Take a good, long look.

Most of us come and go without really looking at our home’s exterior. However, we urge you to stop and stare for a bit. Pretend to be the buyer for just a minute, and drive by (or stand outside) your own home. What’s the general impression your property is making? Maybe you can ask a friend or a realtor to come along and give you some honest feedback.

2. Clean it up.

Overgrown bushes, trash, a cluttered front porch, or lights that no longer work all work against you in the real-estate market. Take some time to do some basic maintenance to your landscaping, windows, lighting, sidewalks, driveway, and so on. Get things looking neat and clean.

3. Consider exterior upgrades.

Is your siding looking worse for wear, no matter how many times you pressure wash it? Maybe your gutters are barely hanging on, or that broken window out front is an eyesore. When a home’s exterior obviously needs repair, it may deter buyers from wanting to consider it. However, you can avoid this issue (and even advertise “new siding” or “new windows”) by hiring a general contractor to make some basic upgrades. Options you may want to consider include: siding, new front door, windows, or even a new roof.

It’s amazing how just a bit of time, effort, and investment dollars can transform your home’s exterior. In no time, you can have a house that catches the eye of almost anyone who passes.
